J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (1954–1955) is the foundational work of modern fantasy literature — Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship of the Ring's journey from the Shire to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring and defeat Sauron. Tolkien, a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, spent twelve years writing the book as a sequel to The Hobbit (1937); it was published in three volumes (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King) between July 1954 and October 1955. The proper reading order begins with The Hobbit, proceeds through the three LotR volumes, and then extends as far as the reader wishes into Tolkien's posthumous mythology: The Silmarillion (1977), Unfinished Tales (1980), and the twelve volumes of The History of Middle-earth (1983–1996).

Is The Lord of the Rings one novel or three?
Tolkien wrote it as a single novel, but his publisher insisted on dividing it into three volumes for cost reasons. Reading the three volumes consecutively is the proper experience — they are not three books but one very long one.
