J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (1954–1955) is the foundational work of modern epic fantasy — Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship of the Ring journeying to destroy the One Ring and defeat Sauron, published in three volumes over fifteen months. Tolkien wrote it as a sequel to The Hobbit (1937), working on it for twelve years; it created the template for nearly all subsequent high fantasy and remains the bestselling fantasy novel in history. The recommended reading order starts with The Hobbit, proceeds through the three volumes, and then extends as far as the reader wishes into The Silmarillion (1977) and Unfinished Tales (1980). The Peter Jackson film trilogy (2001–2003) is among the most celebrated film adaptations in cinema history.
