Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1864 foundational novella — the bitter, self-lacerating monologue of an unnamed civil servant in St. Petersburg who has retreated from public life and obsessively argues against rational self-interest and progressive optimism. Identified by later critics as the founding text of literary existentialism. The Underground Man is the psychological predecessor to all of Dostoevsky's subsequent great characters.
