Niels Lyhne (1880) by Jens Peter Jacobsen is the great Danish novel of atheism, idealism, and disillusionment — a work that Rilke called one of the most important books in his life and that he read every year, and that influenced an enormous range of European writers from Thomas Mann to Rainer Maria Rilke to Hermann Hesse. Niels Lyhne is a dreamer born into a world that refuses to accommodate dreams: he is too idealistic for practical life, too self-aware for love, too honest for consolation. He falls in love with women who are unavailable or indifferent; he abandons his artistic ambitions; he watches his friends and family die; he goes to war in the 1864 Danish-Prussian war and is killed there at thirty-five. Jacobsen's achievement is to make this catalog of failure not depressing but strangely exhilarating — the novel's beauty lies in the exactitude with which Jacobsen renders Niels's consciousness, his self-knowledge, his refusal of easy consolation, his insistence (above all) on dying without God's comfort when his child dies and when he himself is dying. 'To die without flinching before nothingness' is the novel's central challenge, and Niels's failure even at this — he calls for the priest on his deathbed — is not a failure of courage but a recognition that the human need for transcendence outlasts any intellectual conviction. The novel was foundational for European literary naturalism and its portrait of a failed idealist remains among the most moving in world fiction.
