Knausgård My Struggle Reading Order

Karl Ove Knausgård's My Struggle (2009–2011) is one of the most extraordinary literary projects of the twenty-first century — a six-volume, 3,600-page autobiographical novel that gave detailed fictional form to Knausgård's actual life: his childhood in Norway, his father's alcoholism and death, his marriages, his struggles with writing, his daily life with his children in Malmö. The project is explicitly named after Hitler's Mein Kampf, and the provocation is intentional: Knausgård was attempting to confront the contemporary prohibition on first-person seriousness, the sense that authentic self-examination had become impossible. The books caused a sensation in Norway — several people depicted in them sued or complained publicly — and have been translated into dozens of languages.

My Struggle — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to read all six volumes of My Struggle?

No — Books 1 and 2 are the most celebrated and can be read as a complete experience in themselves. Many readers read through all six sequentially; others read 1-3 and stop. Book 6 is the most divisive — its long essay on Hitler and Nazism either seems essential or excessive depending on your relationship to the project. The books reward commitment: they build on each other and the earlier volumes gain resonance from the later ones.

Why is it called My Struggle?

Knausgård titled the project Min Kamp in Norwegian, which is the Norwegian translation of Mein Kampf (Hitler's autobiography). The choice was deliberately provocative — Knausgård was commenting on the seriousness with which he was approaching his own autobiographical project, using Hitler's title to insist that his own examination of his life deserved the same attention. The German edition was actually published under a different title because of German laws around Nazi symbols.

What is My Struggle about?

My Struggle is a six-volume autobiographical novel covering Karl Ove Knausgård's entire life from childhood to the present at the time of writing. The project covers his childhood in suburban Norway, his father's alcoholism and death, his years as a student and aspiring writer, his marriages and fatherhood, and his daily domestic life in Malmö. The books are written with extreme intimacy and detail — every mundane moment is given the same attention as the dramatic ones — and organized around the relationship between memory, writing, and the attempt to understand one's own life.
