What is the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset?
A fixed mindset is the belief that abilities are innate and fixed — you either have talent or you don't, and success is a demonstration of that talent. A growth mindset is the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work — challenge and failure are opportunities to learn and improve rather than evidence of inadequacy. Dweck's research shows that these beliefs — which people hold about their intelligence, athletic ability, artistic talent, and social skills — profoundly affect how people respond to difficulty: fixed-mindset people avoid challenges that might reveal their limitations, while growth-mindset people embrace them as opportunities to grow.
Has growth mindset research been replicated?
The growth mindset research has faced replication challenges. Several large-scale studies attempting to replicate classroom interventions — teaching students about growth mindset to improve their academic performance — have found smaller effects than Dweck's original research, and some replications have failed to find significant effects. A 2018 pre-registered replication in Norway found no effect of a growth mindset intervention on academic achievement. Dweck and colleagues have argued that the interventions need to be implemented carefully and at the right moments to be effective, and that the inconsistency in results reflects differences in implementation quality rather than fundamental failures of the underlying theory.
