About Journey to the West
Journey to the West (1592), attributed to Wu Cheng'en, is one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature and the most globally influential Chinese narrative ever written — the source of the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, who has traveled from a Tang dynasty Buddhist pilgrimage story into anime, manga, video games, and children's television worldwide. The novel follows the monk Xuanzang on his journey to India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures, accompanied by the irrepressible shape-shifting monkey Sun Wukong, the gluttonous pig-demon Zhu Bajie, and the water monster Sha Wujing. Its one hundred chapters encompass ninety-nine demons and adventures in a world of comic, metaphysical, and Buddhist invention. Arthur Waley's abridged translation (Monkey) is the most accessible English-language entry; Anthony Yu's four-volume Chicago translation is complete.
