About It Can't Happen Here

Sinclair Lewis's It Can't Happen Here (1935) imagines the election of a fascist American president, Buzz Windrip, and the rapid collapse of democratic institutions. Written in seven months in response to the rise of European fascism, it follows newspaper editor Doremus Jessup's resistance to the Windrip dictatorship in a Vermont town.
