An American Marriage — Frequently Asked Questions

Is An American Marriage a standalone?

Yes — An American Marriage is a complete standalone novel. Tayari Jones has written other novels (Leaving Atlanta, The Untelling, Silver Sparrow), but they are entirely independent of An American Marriage.

Is An American Marriage a romance?

An American Marriage is primarily a novel about marriage, justice, and what love can and cannot survive — the romance between Celestial and Roy is the engine, but the novel's real subject is the American criminal justice system's effect on Black families and communities. Jones has said the novel is about love in the context of injustice.

How does An American Marriage deal with wrongful conviction?

The novel doesn't focus on the mechanics of Roy's exoneration — it focuses on what happens to a marriage during the years between wrongful conviction and release. Jones was interested in how incarceration warps time differently for the person inside prison and the person waiting outside, and what happens to love when two people age through such different experiences of the same years.

Is An American Marriage based on true events?

An American Marriage is fiction. Tayari Jones has said in interviews that she was moved to write the novel after talking to a man at a party who told her he had been wrongfully convicted and served seven years. She was struck by the way his wife responded — both women sympathizing with each other and neither entirely wrong. That conversation became the emotional seed of the novel.
