About An American Marriage

Tayari Jones's An American Marriage (2018) is a standalone novel about newlyweds Celestial and Roy Hamilton — a young professional Black couple in Atlanta — after Roy is wrongfully convicted of rape and sentenced to twelve years in prison. Told through letters and alternating perspectives, the novel explores what love owes incarceration and what justice means in America. It won the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2019 and was an Oprah's Book Club selection.
