Wolf HallWolf Hall Trilogy Reading Order
Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall Trilogy follows Thomas Cromwell — Henry VIII's chief minister from 1532 to 1540 — through the religious and dynastic upheavals of the Tudor court. The trilogy consists of Wolf Hall (2009), Bring Up the Bodies (2012), and The Mirror & the Light (2020). The first two volumes each won the Booker Prize, making Mantel the first woman and first British author to win it twice. Read in order — each novel follows directly from the last.

Wolf Hall — Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to read Wolf Hall in order?
Yes — Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies, and The Mirror & the Light follow one another directly and should be read in that order. Each is self-contained enough to be followed on its own terms, but the full emotional weight of the trilogy — particularly of Cromwell's fate in The Mirror & the Light — requires the context of the previous volumes.
What is unusual about the writing style in Wolf Hall?
Wolf Hall is written in close third-person present tense and uses 'he' to refer to Cromwell throughout — even in scenes where multiple male characters are present — which creates an unusual intimacy with Cromwell's perspective. Mantel wanted to put the reader inside Cromwell's head so completely that his point of view became the reader's default. Most readers adapt quickly and find it one of the most immersive techniques in contemporary literary fiction.
Did Thomas Cromwell really do all the things in Wolf Hall?
Mantel was careful about the historical record and invented freely within the documented gaps. The broad outlines — Cromwell's relationship with Wolsey, his role in the annulments and executions, his fall — are historically accurate. The intimate details of his domestic life and inner thoughts are Mantel's invention. She described her method as reading widely in the primary sources and then imagining what the evidence implied about the person.
Are there other books in the Wolf Hall series beyond the trilogy?
The Wolf Hall Trilogy is complete at three volumes. Hilary Mantel died in September 2022. She left behind a short story collection, The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher (2014), and a stage adaptation of Wolf Hall was produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company. There is no continuation of the trilogy.
