About Winter in the Blood

James Welch's Winter in the Blood (1974) follows an unnamed Blackfeet narrator in his early thirties who drifts through northern Montana — between his family's ranch, the nearby town, and memories of his grandmother — trying to understand who he is and where he comes from. One of the first major works of the Native American literary renaissance, it combines comedy and elegy in a portrait of alienation unique in American fiction.
