Cheryl Strayed's Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (2012) is the memoir of a woman who — at twenty-six, recently divorced, in the grip of heroin addiction following her mother's death — impulsively decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail alone, despite having no outdoor experience. The eleven-hundred-mile solo hike from the Mojave Desert to the Oregon/Washington border became the physical and psychological journey of her recovery. Wild spent more than 100 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was adapted into the 2014 film with Reese Witherspoon.
