What does the title 'When Breath Becomes Air' mean?
The title is drawn from a poem by the sixteenth-century English poet Fulke Greville: 'You that seek what life is in death / Now find it air that once was breath.' It captures the book's central movement: from the living, breathing surgeon who sought to understand mortality from a safe clinical distance to the dying patient who must actually inhabit it. The breath-to-air transformation — from something alive and purposeful to something dispersed and formless — is Kalanithi's image for the transition from life to death, and for the book's effort to find meaning in that transition.
