Naomi Novik's Uprooted (2015) is a complete standalone fantasy novel. There is no sequel. The novel is a dark fairy tale inspired by Eastern European folk traditions, particularly Polish folklore, about Agnieszka — a girl from a village on the edge of a corrupted magical forest called the Wood — and the Dragon, a cold and powerful wizard who takes one girl from her valley every ten years to serve him. The novel's relationship with Polish folklore and its sense of magic as something wild and personal rather than systematic won it the Nebula Award for Best Novel.
