Don DeLillo is one of the defining voices of late-twentieth-century American fiction, a novelist obsessed with systems, paranoia, mass culture, and the strange ways in which technology and media shape consciousness. His debut novel Americana (1971) was followed by the conspiracy thriller Libra (1988), the campus satire White Noise (1985), and his masterwork Underworld (1997), which traces Cold War anxiety through five decades of American life. DeLillo's prose is precise and eerie, his dialogue stylized, his plots often circling around assassination, terrorism, or the secret architectures of power. Falling Man (2007) and Zero K (2016) represent his late period, meditating on September 11 and cryonics respectively.
