Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption (2010) is the nonfiction narrative of Louis 'Louie' Zamperini — Olympic runner, WWII bombardier, survivor of forty-seven days on a raft in the Pacific Ocean after his plane was shot down, and prisoner of war in a series of Japanese camps including the most brutal, Naoetsu. Hillenbrand's account of Zamperini's extraordinary life and its aftermath of trauma and faith became one of the most celebrated works of narrative nonfiction of recent decades and spent over four years on the New York Times bestseller list.
