What is a 'system' in the sense Meadows uses the term?
Meadows defines a system as 'an interconnected set of elements that is coherently organized in a way that achieves something' — composed of three things: elements, interconnections, and a function or purpose. The bathtub is a stock (the water level), flows (the faucet inflow and the drain outflow), and feedback loops (your perception of the water level that causes you to turn the faucet up or down). Meadows argues that most of the world's most important phenomena — climate change, poverty traps, market crashes, species extinction, organizational failure — are better understood as the behavior of systems than as the actions of individual agents.
What are feedback loops and why do they matter?
Feedback loops are the mechanisms by which a system's outputs affect its future inputs — the circular causality that gives systems their characteristic behaviors. Reinforcing (positive) feedback loops amplify change: compound interest makes wealth grow faster as it grows; population growth makes population grow faster as it grows; nuclear chain reactions accelerate as neutrons released by fission events trigger further fissions. Balancing (negative) feedback loops resist change and seek equilibrium: a thermostat turns the furnace off when the house warms to the target temperature; a predator-prey relationship limits the growth of both species. Meadows argues that most of the counterintuitive, seemingly irrational behaviors of complex systems — boom-bust cycles, policy resistance, tragedy of the commons — are explained by the interactions between reinforcing and balancing feedback loops.
