Anthony Trollope was one of the most prolific and professionally accomplished novelists of the Victorian era — the author of 47 novels, including two of the great series of Victorian fiction (the Barsetshire Chronicles and the Palliser novels). The Way We Live Now (1875) is his most ambitious and modern-feeling work: a satire of financial speculation and social corruption organized around the fraudulent financier Augustus Melmotte, written in anger after Trollope returned from Australia to find English society in the grip of speculative fever.
