What is the undoing project?
'The Undoing Project' is the name that Kahneman and Tversky gave to their research program on counterfactual thinking — the mental process of 'undoing' events by imagining how they might have turned out differently. 'If only I had left five minutes earlier, I wouldn't have been in the accident' is counterfactual thinking; Kahneman and Tversky documented the systematic rules that govern which aspects of a situation the mind 'undoes' and which it leaves in place, and showed that these rules produce predictable biases in emotional response and judgment.
Who was Amos Tversky?
Amos Tversky (1937–1996) was an Israeli cognitive psychologist whose collaboration with Daniel Kahneman, beginning in the early 1970s at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, produced the foundational papers of the heuristics and biases research program — including 'Judgment under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases' (1974) and 'Prospect Theory' (1979). Widely considered one of the most influential psychologists of the twentieth century, he died of metastatic melanoma in 1996 at the age of fifty-nine, six years before Kahneman received the Nobel Prize for their joint work.
