Viet Thanh Nguyen's Sympathizer duology begins with The Sympathizer (2015), a Pulitzer Prize winner narrated by a communist spy embedded in the South Vietnamese army who tells his story as a forced confession. The Committed (2021) follows the same unnamed narrator to Paris as a refugee entangled in the drug trade. Both novels are sharply political, formally ambitious, and in dialogue with the tradition of anti-colonial literature.
