About Silmarillion

J.R.R. Tolkien's posthumous mythology of Middle-earth comprises The Silmarillion (1977), Unfinished Tales (1980), and the twelve volumes of The History of Middle-earth (1983–1996), all edited by his son Christopher Tolkien. The Silmarillion is the core text — the creation myth, the First Age of the Wars of Beleriand, the fall of Númenor — compiled from Tolkien's lifelong mythological writing. Unfinished Tales is more narrative and accessible. The Children of Húrin (2007), Beren and Lúthien (2017), and The Fall of Gondolin (2018) are single First Age stories edited by Christopher Tolkien into standalone volumes. All assume familiarity with The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
