Donna Tartt's The Secret History (1992) is a complete standalone novel. There is no sequel. Richard Papen, a student from California, transfers to a small Vermont college and is accepted into an elite group of five classics students taught by a charismatic professor. The novel opens with the announcement that one of them has been killed — and then tells the story of how it happened and why. The Secret History popularized the 'dark academia' aesthetic and the reverse-mystery structure (we know who died and how before we know why).
