About The Seagull

The Seagull (1895) by Anton Chekhov is the play that established the Chekhovian theatrical method — the indirect dialogue, the plays-within-plays, and the way characters talk past each other. The 1896 first production in St. Petersburg was a disaster; the 1898 Moscow Art Theatre production under Stanislavski established it as a masterpiece and made theatrical history. Nina, Trigorin, Treplev, Arkadina, and the killed seagull are among Chekhov's most enduring characters.
