The Sandman Reading Order
Neil Gaiman's The Sandman (1989–1996) is the comic book series that most fully realized the literary potential of the graphic novel form — Dream of the Endless (also called Morpheus, the Sandman, the King of Dreams) ruling the realm of dreams, from his captivity in 1916 through his eventual fate. Published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, The Sandman ran for 75 issues over eight years and is collected in ten volumes. It won multiple Hugo Awards, introduced mainstream readers to comic books as a literary form, and established Gaiman's reputation. The series draws on mythology, folklore, literature, and history to create a universe of astonishing breadth.

The Sandman — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct reading order for The Sandman?
Read The Sandman in publication order: Preludes & Nocturnes (Vol. 1), The Doll's House (Vol. 2), Dream Country (Vol. 3), Season of Mists (Vol. 4), A Game of You (Vol. 5), Fables & Reflections (Vol. 6), Brief Lives (Vol. 7), Worlds' End (Vol. 8), The Kindly Ones (Vol. 9), The Wake (Vol. 10). Some readers skip Dream Country and Fables & Reflections on first reading because they are standalone stories; both are worth reading in context on re-read.
Is The Sandman available to read other than in comics form?
The Sandman is available as collected editions (ten volumes plus Overture, an interquel), as individual issues, and digitally. Netflix produced a television adaptation (2022) that covers the first two volumes; it is widely considered a faithful adaptation and a good companion to the comics but not a substitute for them. There is also an audio drama adaptation featuring James McAvoy as Dream, produced by Audible, which covers the first few volumes with Gaiman's direct involvement.
