The Power of Now Reading Order

Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment (1997) is one of the best-selling spiritual books in history — a guide to accessing the peace and clarity that Tolle argues are available in the present moment, beyond the compulsive thinking and ego identification that constitute most people's ordinary consciousness — drawing on Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Tolle's own experience of a spontaneous spiritual transformation.

The Power of Now — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 'pain body' in The Power of Now?

Tolle introduces the 'pain body' as his term for the accumulated emotional pain that exists in most people as a semi-autonomous psychic entity — a pattern of negative emotional energy that has built up from past hurts, disappointments, and trauma, and that periodically takes over thought and behavior, feeding on negative emotion and recreating situations that generate more pain. The pain body is not a psychological disorder but what Tolle sees as a universal human condition, the accumulated residue of the ego's suffering. He argues that it can be 'disidentified from' through present-moment awareness — by noticing when the pain body is activated rather than identifying with it — which gradually reduces its power over the person.

What does Tolle mean by 'being in the Now'?

Tolle's central teaching is that most human suffering arises from the mind's tendency to live in either the past (through memory and regret) or the future (through anticipation and anxiety), rather than in the present moment, which is the only time that actually exists. 'Being in the Now' means bringing awareness to the present moment of experience — the sensations in the body, the immediate environment, the breath — rather than being lost in the stream of thoughts about what happened or what might happen. Tolle argues that this shift in attention is not a technique or practice but a recognition of what is already the case: that the past and future exist only as thoughts in the present moment, and that when those thoughts are not believed, only the Now remains.
