The Nightingale — Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Nightingale a standalone?
Yes — The Nightingale is a complete standalone novel. Kristin Hannah has written many other novels (Firefly Lane, The Great Alone, Fly Away, Magic Hour, etc.), but The Nightingale is entirely independent.
Is The Nightingale based on a true story?
The Nightingale is fiction, but Isabelle's story is inspired by real women who helped Allied airmen escape occupied France. Hannah has cited several historical figures, including Andrée de Jongh, who ran the Comet Line escape network, and the approximately 3,000 women who participated in French Resistance escape networks during WWII. The specific characters and their relationships are invented.
Is The Nightingale better than The Great Alone?
Most Kristin Hannah readers who have read both rate The Nightingale as her best novel. The Great Alone (2018), about a woman in 1970s Alaska with a dangerous husband and a dangerous landscape, is Hannah's most atmospheric novel and her own favorite — readers tend to prefer one or the other depending on whether they're drawn more to historical fiction or to wilderness survival fiction.
Is there a film adaptation of The Nightingale?
A film adaptation of The Nightingale was in development for several years with Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning attached as Vianne and Isabelle. The project has been in production limbo as of 2024.
