The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) — Ann Radcliffe's most influential Gothic romance: Emily St. Aubert, orphaned and imprisoned in the remote Italian castle of Udolpho by the villain Montoni, surrounded by apparent supernatural terrors that are all eventually explained naturally. Radcliffe's 'explained supernatural' made her the most popular novelist in 1790s England.
