About The Monk
The Monk (1796) — Matthew Gregory Lewis's transgressive Gothic novel: the monk Ambrosio, admired for his austere piety, is tempted by the disguised Matilda and falls into a catastrophic series of transgressions (seduction, rape, murder, incest, a pact with the Devil). Written by Lewis at nineteen, it caused an immediate scandal and established the tradition of Gothic transgression.
