Robert Musil's The Man Without Qualities (1930–1943) is the unfinished masterpiece of twentieth-century German fiction — the story of Ulrich, a mathematician and former cavalry officer who takes a year's leave from his life to find out what it means to live in the modern world, set in the Vienna of 1913–1914 on the eve of the First World War. Musil worked on the novel for over twenty years and was still revising it when he died in exile in Geneva in 1942; the published text runs to over a thousand pages and is still incomplete. The novel is not a conventional narrative but a sustained meditation on the relationship between rationality and feeling, on the possibility of meaningful action in a world that has become purely bureaucratic, and on the strange experience of existing as a 'man without qualities' — someone who has retained enough detachment from the available social identities to see them all as provisional.
