About Lone Ranger and Tonto
Sherman Alexie's The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (1993) is a debut story collection of twenty-two interconnected stories set on and around the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington State, introducing Victor Joseph and Thomas Builds-the-Fire and establishing the reservation's basketball courts, poverty, and mordant humor as the most distinctive fictional territory in contemporary Native American literature. The collection won the PEN/Hemingway Award and was adapted by Alexie into the screenplay for Smoke Signals (1998), the first feature film written, directed, and co-produced by Native Americans to receive wide theatrical release.
