The Little Friend Reading Order
The Little Friend (2002) by Donna Tartt is a Southern Gothic novel set in Alexandria, Mississippi in the 1970s, following twelve-year-old Harriet Cleve Dufresnes as she investigates the unsolved murder of her older brother Robin, who was found hanged in the family's backyard nine years earlier when Harriet was an infant. The murder destroyed her family — her parents separated, her mother became a ghost of herself — and Harriet, raised on adventure stories and a fierce moral certainty about justice, becomes convinced she knows who did it. Tartt's second novel after The Secret History is slower, stranger, more Southern, and more interested in children and the world as seen through their eyes; it received a more mixed reception than its predecessor but has been reappraised over time as a masterpiece of its own kind.

The Little Friend — Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Little Friend as good as The Secret History?
The Little Friend received a more divided reception than The Secret History — some readers find it slow, digressive, and unresolved; others consider it a deeper and more ambitious novel. It is longer, more atmospheric, and less plot-driven than The Secret History, organized around a child's moral certainty rather than adults' sophisticated guilt.
What is the Southern Gothic tradition The Little Friend belongs to?
Southern Gothic is an American literary tradition associated with Flannery O'Connor, William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, and Truman Capote — fiction set in the American South that uses Gothic elements (decay, mystery, grotesque characters, violence) to examine the social and moral failures of Southern culture. The Little Friend is deeply embedded in this tradition.
Does The Little Friend solve the mystery?
The Little Friend deliberately declines to solve the central mystery of Robin's murder — Harriet pursues her theory with absolute conviction, but the novel is interested in the nature of her certainty rather than in providing the reader with definitive answers. It is a mystery novel that rejects the mystery novel's contract with the reader.
