About The Italian
The Italian (1797) — Ann Radcliffe's finest and most concentrated Gothic novel: Ellena and Vivaldi's love opposed by Vivaldi's mother, who enlists the sinister monk Schedoni to separate and then murder Ellena. Schedoni is one of the great Gothic villains — his cold, calculating intelligence is Radcliffe's demonstration that human evil is more terrifying than the supernatural.
