Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch (2013) is a complete standalone novel. There is no sequel. The novel follows Theo Decker, a 13-year-old boy who survives a bomb explosion at a New York museum that kills his mother. In the chaos after the blast, he takes a small Dutch painting — The Goldfinch, by Carel Fabritius — from the rubble. The novel traces Theo's life across the following decades, through foster care in New York, a strange interlude in Las Vegas, a period in the antiques world, and a climax in Amsterdam, with the painting always present.
