Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy begins with The Golden Compass (1995, published in the UK as Northern Lights) — a parallel-world fantasy in which twelve-year-old Lyra Belacqua leaves Oxford to rescue her friend Roger and discovers the truth about Dust and about herself.
