About The Giver
Lois Lowry's The Giver (1993) is one of the most widely assigned novels in American schools — a slim, devastating story about a twelve-year-old boy named Jonas who lives in a Community of enforced Sameness, where suffering, color, and memory have all been eliminated. When Jonas is chosen as the Receiver of Memory, he inherits all the pain, joy, and complexity his community has surrendered. The book won the 1994 Newbery Medal and has never gone out of print. Three companion novels (Gathering Blue, Messenger, Son) expand the world across different communities.
