Why is Lisbeth Salander such an iconic character?

Does the Millennium Trilogy need to be read in order?
Yes — The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest are directly continuous with each other and cannot be read independently. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is more independent but establishes all the characters and relationships essential to the subsequent volumes. The conventional and strongly recommended reading order is simply the publication order: Dragon Tattoo, Played with Fire, Hornets' Nest. Larsson died of a heart attack in November 2004 before any of the novels were published; all three were published posthumously, and Larsson had reportedly planned a ten-book series before his death.
