Philip Roth's Nathan Zuckerman is one of the great recurring characters in American fiction — a Jewish writer from Newark whose career, controversies, and obsessions track Roth's own across nine novels. The Ghost Writer (1979) is the debut, short and perfectly constructed: young Zuckerman visiting the elder writer E. I. Lonoff and discovering Amy Bellette, who may be Anne Frank. Zuckerman Unbound (1981) and The Anatomy Lesson (1983) complete the first tetralogy with The Prague Orgy (1985). The American trilogy — American Pastoral (1997, Pulitzer), I Married a Communist (1998), The Human Stain (2000) — uses Zuckerman as narrator for three panoramic American stories. Collected as Zuckerman Bound (1985).
