Diary of Anne FrankThe Diary of a Young Girl Reading Order
Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl (1947) is the most widely read Holocaust document in the world — the diary Anne Frank kept while hiding with her family and four others in a secret annex in Amsterdam from July 1942 until their arrest on August 4, 1944. Anne Frank died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February or March 1945, several weeks before its liberation. The diary was found and preserved by Miep Gies, one of the helpers, and published by Anne's father Otto Frank — the only member of the annex who survived — in 1947.

Diary of Anne Frank — Frequently Asked Questions
Are there different editions of The Diary of a Young Girl?
There are three primary versions. The 'a' version is the diary as Anne originally wrote it; the 'b' version is Anne's own revised version, which she began editing in 1944 after hearing a radio broadcast that diaries of the occupation would be published after the war. The first published edition (1947) was edited by Otto Frank from the a and b versions, removing some personal passages. The 'definitive edition' (1995) restores the passages Otto Frank removed and is the most complete version available.
What should I read next after The Diary of a Young Girl?
Readers continue with Night by Elie Wiesel — the essential companion, also written by a teenager deported from Hungary, showing what happened to those who were not in hiding. Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, Maus by Art Spiegelman, The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris, and Miep Gies's memoir Anne Frank Remembered are strong companions.
