Carlos Fuentes (1928–2012) was the central figure of the Mexican literary boom — a diplomat's son and public intellectual whose fiction engaged with Mexican history, identity, and the legacies of the Revolution. The Death of Artemio Cruz (1962) is his masterwork: a dying press magnate reliving his life through three alternating narrative voices, spanning the Revolution, the Cristero War, and seven decades of PRI rule. Where the Air Is Clear (1958), the debut novel of Mexico City's modernization, and Terra Nostra (1975), the vast historical novel of the Hispanic world, are the other major landmarks. Fuentes died in Mexico City in 2012.
