Philip Roth's The Counterlife (1986) is his most formally experimental novel — four or five competing versions of the same events, Nathan Zuckerman and his brother Henry living out alternative lives in New Jersey, Israel, England, and Switzerland, the narrative collapsing and restarting around questions of identity, Jewishness, and fiction's relationship to reality. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award and represents Roth at his most Nabokovian — the novel most interested in the novel as a form. The Counterlife stands as the fifth Nathan Zuckerman novel after the first tetralogy (The Ghost Writer, Zuckerman Unbound, The Anatomy Lesson, The Prague Orgy). The American trilogy that follows — American Pastoral (1997), I Married a Communist (1998), The Human Stain (2000) — uses Zuckerman as a narrator in a different, more retrospective mode.
