Alice Walker's The Color Purple (1982) is a standalone epistolary novel following Celie, a Black girl in rural Georgia in the 1930s, who writes letters to God and her sister Nettie through decades of abuse and finally a love that transforms her. Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and National Book Award winner 1983; adapted into a film by Steven Spielberg (1985), a Broadway musical (2005), and a second film (2023).
