Markus Zusak's The Book Thief (2005) is a complete standalone novel. There is no sequel. The novel is narrated by Death and follows Liesel Meminger, a young girl living with foster parents in a small German town during World War II, who steals books and shares them with the Jewish man her family is hiding in their basement. The Book Thief has sold over 16 million copies worldwide and is one of the most celebrated YA-crossover literary novels of the 21st century.

Is The Book Thief a standalone?
Yes — The Book Thief is a complete standalone novel. Markus Zusak wrote The Messenger (also called I Am the Messenger) before The Book Thief, and Bridge of Clay after it, but none are connected. The Book Thief is entirely self-contained.
Is The Book Thief YA or adult fiction?
The Book Thief was originally published as a YA novel in Australia but was marketed as adult literary fiction in the United States. It is widely taught in high schools and universities. Its narrator (Death) and some of its thematic preoccupations (the narrator's reflections on mortality, violence, and the persistence of love) read as more adult than most YA fiction.
Why is The Book Thief narrated by Death?
Zusak has said in interviews that using Death as narrator allowed him to write about the Holocaust from a perspective that could hold the full weight of what happened — Death has seen everything, is not destroyed by what it witnesses, and can speak about human violence and goodness from a place of vast, exhausted experience. The choice also lets Zusak tell the reader from early in the novel who will and will not survive.
Is The Book Thief historically accurate?
The Book Thief is historical fiction. The setting (Molching, Bavaria, the war years) is invented but closely based on real Bavarian towns. The events — Allied bombing, the Kristallnacht aftermath, Jews being marched through towns to concentration camps — are based on historical record. Zusak grew up hearing stories from his German-Austrian parents who lived through this period.
