Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar (1963) is a standalone semi-autobiographical novel following Esther Greenwood, a young woman from Massachusetts who wins a summer internship at a New York fashion magazine and then experiences a severe mental breakdown. Plath's only novel, published one month before her death at age thirty, it is one of the most celebrated novels about mental illness in American literature.
