Kate Chopin's The Awakening (1899) follows Edna Pontellier, a Kentucky woman married in New Orleans, who spends a summer at Grand Isle and awakens to her own desires and the impossibility of living within the constraints of her society. Published to outrage in 1899 and suppressed for decades, it is now recognized as a masterpiece of American realism.
