Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven (2014) is a complete standalone literary fiction novel. There is a companion novel, The Glass Hotel (2020), that takes place in the same world and shares some characters, and a sequel, Sea of Tranquility (2022), that connects all three. All three can be read independently. Station Eleven is set 20 years after a flu pandemic kills most of the global population, following a traveling Shakespeare company in the Great Lakes region — and the night before the pandemic, when a famous actor collapses on a Toronto stage.
