Neil Gaiman's Stardust (1999) is a complete standalone fantasy novel. There is no sequel. Stardust tells the story of Tristran Thorn, a young man in the English village of Wall, who crosses the wall into the magical land of Faerie to retrieve a fallen star for the girl he thinks he loves — and discovers the star is a person, and that he may not know what he actually wants. The book was originally published as an illustrated novel with art by Charles Vess; both editions tell the same story.

Stardust — Frequently Asked Questions
Is Stardust by Neil Gaiman a standalone?
Yes — Stardust is a complete standalone novel with no sequels, prequels, or related books required. Neil Gaiman has written other fantasy novels (American Gods, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neverwhere), but each is entirely independent.
Is Stardust appropriate for all ages?
Stardust is a fairy tale for adults — more explicitly than children's fairy tales it deals with death, desire, and violence, though in a tone that is romantic and fantastical rather than graphic. The 2007 film adaptation is rated PG-13. Most readers place it at 14 and up, with the caveat that Gaiman writes fairy tales in which dark things happen.
Is Stardust related to American Gods or Good Omens?
Stardust is not connected to American Gods, Good Omens (co-written with Terry Pratchett), Neverwhere, or any of Gaiman's other novels. Each is a completely independent story with its own world and characters.
What is Stardust about?
Stardust is a fairy tale in the classic tradition — a young man makes a rash promise to bring back a fallen star for a girl, crosses into the magical kingdom of Faerie on the other side of the wall that borders his village, and finds that the star is a young woman. It's a love story, a quest, and a meditation on what we think we want vs. what we actually need.
