About Small Island

Andrea Levy's Small Island (2004) follows two Jamaican immigrants — Gilbert Joseph and his wife Hortense — who arrive in postwar London and become lodgers with Queenie and Bernard Bligh. Told from four perspectives across 1948 and wartime flashbacks, the novel is one of the defining portrayals of the Windrush generation. Winner of the Orange Prize, the Whitbread Novel Award, and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize.
