Slade House Reading Order

Slade House (2015) by David Mitchell is a slim, intensely atmospheric horror novella — the companion piece to The Bone Clocks, set in the same fictional mythology. Every nine years, on the last Saturday of October, a door appears in a narrow alley in a British town, opening into the grounds of Slade House, where two powerful twins — the Grayer siblings — feed on the psychic energy of visitors whose souls they trap in a 'lacuna', a repeating pocket of falsified reality. The novel follows five successive visitors across five decades, each arriving through different means and each initially unaware of what Slade House is. Mitchell published it partly as a Halloween project, and it has the pleasures of a very well-executed ghost story as well as the deeper satisfactions of his larger fictional universe.
