About George Eliot
George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans) is widely regarded as the greatest English novelist of the Victorian era — the author of Middlemarch, which Virginia Woolf called 'one of the few English novels written for grown-up people.' Silas Marner (1861) is her most accessible and fable-like work: a miser restored to human connection by the arrival of an orphan child. Reading her novels in order from Silas Marner and Adam Bede through Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda reveals the full development of one of the most penetrating moral imaginations in English literary history.
